HELWIG STUDY GUIDE AND WORKSHOP DVDs
The Sixth Edition (2011) of Dr. Andrew Helwig’s Study Guide for the National Counselor Examination and CPCE (Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination) has been published. This book prepares professional counselors and graduate students for the National Counselor Exam and CPCE. The National Counselor Exam is used by most states for licensure and it is used for National Counselor Certification by NBCC. |
The 400-page Study Guide focuses on the eight content areas tested on the NCE and the CPCE as well as other similar exams such as those taken by school counselors applying for the school certification credential in their state. The eight content areas reviewed in this Study Guide are: |
Human Growth and Development Social & Cultural Foundations Helping Relationships (theories & techniques) Group Work Career & Lifestyle Development Appraisal (test & measurements) Research & Program Evaluation (statistics) Professional Orientation (ethics & legal issues) |
The Study Guide also examines the nature of the test questions, cut-off score determination, the new NBCC Work Behavior Analysis results, test-taking tips, and study strategies. The Study Guide contains a CPCE Practice Exam, a NCE Practice Exam as well as the ACA Code of Ethics. |
The Study Guide is user-friendly in that all the eight content area information is double-spaced, outline-formatted with considerable use of bolding of important items. |
WORKSHOP DVDs |
Dr. Helwig has conducted over 240 exam preparation workshops in 18 states since 1990 for over 4,000 counselors and graduate students. This workshop has been recorded onto three DVDs of movie quality with over six hours of material. Four of the content areas, which counselors appear to struggle with most, are reviewed thoroughly. These are: Appraisal, Research, Professional Orientation (ethics), and Career Development. The other four content areas are reviewed briefly but with significant suggestions about specific content as to importance, likelihood of being on the exam, and strategies for studying the material. The workshop begins with a discussion and review of the NCE, the content areas, the work domain contexts, scoring procedures and cutoff score determination. Test taking strategies are also examined including how to prepare for the exam. |
